The idea to keep regular homeschool classes going through the holidays may not have much opposition from a homeschool teacher who knows that sticking to the routine will make it easier on everyone in the long run. This is why most homeschool classrooms continue through the holiday season, albeit a bit scaled back so that they can enjoy the festivities. In addition to the core subjects there are other elective subjects which can work out every well and be in tune with the season. Here are some ideas to get you started.
Nature Studies
The winters bring about their own scope of nature studies. While taking a walk out in the park may not be exactly the most practical way to study nature, you can come up with a simple procedure to see how plants react to the cold. Start a germination project with some seeds in three different bowls. One is to be placed in the nice warm room that the homeschool classes are held in. The other is to be place just outside the front door or in the porch if you have one. The third is the bowl placed out in the elements. It could be left in the backyard or on the outer portion of a large window sill if you have no intention of heading out to the backyard to check on it everyday. Have them record temperatures at each location for a week, also make observations of the actual germination process.
Artwork
With all the festivities going on it is only natural to extend them to the homeschool classroom. There is a lot that can be done in art class in terms of decorations for the holidays. Making cards, festive ornaments, even paintings and scrap booking. A lot of art and craft material can be used up in these classes to good effect during art class.
Music Appreciation
This would be a good time to take a music appreciation class in the homeschool classroom. Different types of music can be studies and a bit about the history of each genre can be discussed. Along with learning to sing some of the songs in each genre as a dual holiday activity. Those who play musical instruments could learn how to play the songs as well as perform them for friends and family during the season.
