There is currently inconclusive proof about how the behaviour of the parents can affect the IQ of a child. So far it was assumed that a child was born with a specific intelligence and some of it was developed by the environment in which she grew up. However more researchers are pointing to the facts that if a parent is more involved with the child, she tends to grow up to be smarter.

While scientific research is still backing up its theory with supportive studies, it can do no harm for you to pay a bit more attention to your baby right now in the hopes of making her smarter. Some of the activities that stimulate the brain of a new born to six month old baby are listed here.

* Take your baby in your arms and talk to her while you sway her gently. The tone should be soothing and the words should not be “baby talk” but actual words. Children who are baby talked take a while longer to recognize regular words even in school classrooms.

* Singing nursery rhymes is good to build up word power. Constant repetition is a great way to get them familiar with new concepts. One mother I know actually used to sing out the multiplication tables of two and three to her four month old baby.

* When you are busy elsewhere hang up a toy mobile in the crib of the baby. All it need is a ribbon and a soft toy to get going. Also change the toy every week so that the child is encouraged to look at new things.

* Encourage the use of the senses. Give the baby a toy to hold and feel the tactile differences in the surfaces of a toy. Draw her attention to different colours on the toy by naming them  and pointing to them.

* Gently massaging the baby is also a great way to deepen the trust and bond that you are building with your infant. This is a bond that will strengthen with time as the baby begins to understand that you can be trusted.
