When trying to buy toys that are educational, try and look for some that can be played with in a variety of ways. This encourages your homeschool students to think creatively even as their hands are busy doing new things. As a parent one is often so concerned about the child learning the right solution to a puzzle that we tend to help them along nudging them with advice from the sidelines. Don’t do that. When you offer no solution the child finds different ways to play with the toys. Here are some ideas for toys that can help develop engineering skills in your children.
The Wooden Blocks
There is nothing quite as simple and flexible as the standard unit blocks. These can offer hours of uninterrupted play with your children making up stuff using their own creativity and dexterity. There is no right or wrong way to play with them. Its all a matter of individual choice.
The Train and Railway Station Set
Playing with train tracks is a great way for children to set up interesting routes, diversions, and detours. Its basic engineering skills at their best. Making a train run down to a railway station under the Lego bridge and over the bunched up blanket, how much fun is that!
Gears Beginners Building Set
Putting different sized gears together to make a nice complicated piece of machinery is something most people enjoy teasing their brains with. While you may think that it may be too much for your toddler to handle. a beginners gear set is a great way to get them building more complex things at a later stage.
Chess and Chinese Checkers
These may not be exactly engineering skills, but they will be developing an out of the box thinking with these games. Playing these strategy games with you and their siblings will also give the children an analytical mind that allows them to think up of creative solutions to different problems. Make sure that you play them regularly and in a healthy competitive spirit to keep them interested in coming back.
