There are a number of field trips that are educational and do not cost a lot. It would be a good idea to match the interests of the children with the activities you plan so that the field trip is more fun. Here are some more ideas for field trips that you can take with your homeschool students.

Visit a local orchard

Most children are fascinated to see fruits growing on trees. If you have a local orchard close by call up the owner and ask if you can visit. Kids will love to help pick their own grapes, strawberries, apples, etc. It would make sense to go during harvest time to see the actual fruit on the trees and bushes. Plan it out with the owner.

Go to an art studio on an open day

An art studio can be a fascinating place for your budding new artist to visit. Make up a list of all the different kinds of art you saw on display once you come home. If you took photographs, make a collage out of them. Ask them what they liked the best and what they would like to try their hand at. Some times open days also include a demonstration by an artist.

Attend free performances of plays or watch street theater

Keep an eye open for any free play performances that are likely to hit your town. Some parks are associated with street theater. You can take your children to watch a street play being performed live in the park. These usually deal with an environmental or social issue. You can further discuss this with the children later to help them understand the performance better. They could even perform a play of their own on an issue they care about.

Take a nature walk in different environments

Once your children are old enough to walk a while without getting tired you can take them on nature walks. If you live near the sea, wetlands, hills, lake, etc you can describe the natural environment and how the ecosystem system works. A trip to the beach can also become a field trip.
