TRANSCRIPT

I have a quick – but profound – story for you.

A neighbor was walking down a backcountry road and saw a farmer fixing a fence with his son. The neighbor watched for a few minutes as the son struggled to get the fence straight, then took the farmer aside and asked “Why are you letting your son help you? It’s going to take five times as long. You should just do it yourself.” The farmer replied “Oh, I’m afraid you’ve made a mistake. You think I’m repairing a fence. I’m not. I’m raising my son.”

See, much of the time when we lead our kids through daily activities, we are making a choice. Are we doing things the way we are primarily for their benefit, or for ours? Be conscious about these choices regardless of whether it’s when shopping for groceries or choosing their education. Ask yourself honestly, “Is this really what’s best for my son or daughter long-term? Or what’s easiest for me right now?”

Often with some careful thought, we can find a win-win solution where our needs get met AND our child’s are too. But it’s all too easy to only focus on what is easiest or quickest from our own perspective. So choose wisely. We’re not out to just fix a fence - We’re raising our children.
