There are primarily three main types of learners identified by teaching experts. They are Visual learners, Auditory learners and Kinesthetic learners. As the words imply each of the learning styles has a strong focus on a specific sense. Here are some different tools that can be used for each of the learning styles to maximize their efficacy.
- Presentations : Add in a number of pictures and some snazzy animation and the visual learners will be hooked. You could even make it an assignment for them to design on a topic that they have just been taught.
- Flash Cards : Again a winner for the more visual learners in your classroom. Add whatever engaging picture you can to a word and you can be sure that you little learner is going to keep that connection with him for a lifetime.
- Recitation : For the auditory learner just listening to the same material over and over and getting to recite it as well makes a big impact. The more often you go over it the better the audio based learner is going to know it.
- Class Discussion : This one is a winner for auditory learners who need to work through points in a logical manner. Plus the teacher gets a good idea if the homeschool student is unclear about any part of the concept.
- Manipulatives : Its been found easier to teach a kinesthetic learner when his hands are kept occupied. Maths manipulatives, science equipment and a whole lot more can be used with these students.
- Props : Using props to make your point works beautifully with children who like to touch things. Other hands on activities will be useful for them to pick up different topics. Give them simulations that they can really get their brains working with.
While all these tools work well in the homeschool classroom, you need to be able to figure out which child of yours favours what learning type. The minute you solve that mystery, you will be able to handle making lesson plans all that much easier.
