Describing a personality is not the easiest to things for laymen, but psychologists have come up with something known as the Big Five Personality Traits theory. Here the belief is that all aspects of behaviour can be successfully explained as part of the person’s personality based on how they rank on five items on a scale.

What are the Big Five Personality Traits?

The easiest way to describe this personality theory is by using a simple acronym – OCEAN. O stands for Openness, C for Conscientiousness, E for Extroversion, A for Agreeableness, and N for Neuroticism. Each of these is considered a core personality trait. Most people will have these core traits in some measure, big or small, in their personalities. And if you are looking to develop a great personality for your homeschool students, you need to work on each of these aspects for each child individually.

How do you Develop the Personality of a Child?

The answer is simple, by working on one trait at a time. Now that you know what the basic core personality traits are you can begin to work on them. If you would like your child to be more open give them a broad range of interests. Let them experience new things constantly. To develop conscientiousness, give them solid goals to meet in specified deadlines. Encourage them to think on their own and organize details well. In order for them to be extroverts, you will have to ensure that they meet a wide range of people and interact with them.

To make them more agreeable increase their emotional quotient by making them more compassionate towards others. Be kind to those less fortunate to them and even show affection in many ways to people they truly care about. To help your homeschool student become less neurotic, help them deal better with their own emotions. Teach them to express their fears, angers, and worries openly rather than suffering anxiety attacks on their own. Each trait has a scale and you need to first measure where your homeschool student is at, before helping him move in a more positive direction.
