Hey there! I\u2019m so glad you\u2019re here\u2014because the fact that you’re even watching this means you care about your child\u2019s education, especially when it comes to science. And let me tell you\u2014that already sets you apart from most parents.
\nI\u2019m Aurora Lipper. I\u2019m a former NASA scientist, a mechanical engineer, a university faculty member\u2026 but most importantly, I\u2019m a mom and a passionate science teacher who\u2019s taught over 10,000 students how to enjoy and do well with homeschool science.
\nIf you want your kids to not just \u201cget through\u201d science, but to actually understand how the world works\u2014and have fun doing it\u2014then you\u2019re in the right place.
\nLet\u2019s talk about the 5 biggest mistakes I see parents make when choosing a science curriculum\u2014so you can avoid them.

\nMISTAKE #1: Choosing a curriculum that\u2019s boring or textbook-heavy.
\nLet\u2019s be honest\u2014dry, abstract content makes kids zone out. If your child is just reading and memorizing without doing, they\u2019re going to forget most of it in a few weeks.
\nFix it: Look for a curriculum built around hands-on experiments and real-world applications. Kids learn by doing, not just reading.

\nMISTAKE #2: Picking a program that needs YOU to be the science expert.
\nAs a homeschool parent, you shouldn\u2019t have to spend hours prepping lessons or relearning physics just to teach it.
\nFix it: Choose something that\u2019s provides for independent learning and does the heavy lifting for you\u2014 If science isn\u2019t your thing, that\u2019s okay \u2013 we all have different things we\u2019re good at! So, give your child a curriculum taught by someone who will both teach the academics AND inspire your child to enjoy science.

\nMISTAKE #3: Falling for shiny packaging that doesn\u2019t deliver real science.
\nJust because a program has fun cartoons or video graphics doesn\u2019t mean it\u2019s actually teaching science your kids will remember and understand. Some curriculums provide content to be memorized as \u201cfacts\u201d and phrases, and then use multiple choice quizzes based on these \u201cfactoids\u201d to show how much your child has quote \u201clearned\u201d. Don\u2019t fall for these \u2013 they waste your money while teaching your child very little. And even worse they turn your child off to science when it could become something they really love and thrive doing.
\nFix it: Make sure the curriculum was created by someone who\u2019s actually done real science\u2014and tested the experiments. It should be taught by a teacher who knows the material and uses hands-on activities to teach it to your kids.

\nMISTAKE #4: Buying expensive kits that you don\u2019t need.
\nScience shouldn\u2019t be locked behind pricey gear. Most real science can be done with stuff from your kitchen or garage.
\nFix it: Look for programs that use everyday materials and encourage creative problem-solving.

\nMISTAKE #5: Not defining why you want your kids to learn science.
\nWithout a goal, any curriculum will feel like busywork. Are you teaching science to prep for college? To nurture curiosity? To build critical thinking?
\nFix it: Start with your why\u2014and choose a curriculum that supports that vision.
