  • 104 Seven Biggest Mistakes Parent Make in Teaching Science and What to Do About Them

Did you have a teacher that really had an impact on you? Remember the excitement? Or the thrill you felt when you taught something to someone else and they really got it? First, let me thank you for your commitment to education - a value that is high enough for you that you are stretching for resources to help you reach your goals. In this article, I am going to share with you some of the common mistakes that educators often make.

  • 105 Secrets of Successful Teachers

Did you ever have a teacher that made a real impact on you?  They took a subject you previously thought was dull and boring and somehow made it jump alive? Special teachers can touch our lives in small ways that make big changes later in life by phrasing a topic into just the right words so it really clicks for you, or simply just believing in you when no one else around you did.  These types of teachers are pretty amazing when it comes to inspiring children. If you've ever wondered how some of them 'work their magic', you're not alone.  Most amazing teachers really couldn't tell you how they do what they do - they just know how to reach kids effectively in a way that really makes an impact.

  • 106 Six Keys to Teaching Homeschool Science

As a hands-on science teacher who some kids think is a bit wild, I've found that there are certain very specific keys to teaching science well, and without getting burnt out doing it (especially important for me, because groups regularly hire me to do multi-day science workshops for hundreds of homeschool kids). Actually, these keys just the opposite of how most schools try to teach science. You'll learn my 6 keys to getting kids to want to learn science , and for teaching it in a way that takes less time and is more effective (Otherwise known as the 6 mistakes parents make in teaching homeschool science). This download is an MP3 tele-class with PDF workbook.

  • 107 Long-Term Effects of Not Fulfilling Your Child's Passion for Science

Most kids love the idea of science - of building things, creating inventions, and getting stuff to work by using their own two hands. Kids have a natural passion for science.  The problem comes in when the parent feels they can't meet this need in their child, and they struggle with how to fulfill it. We're going to take a look at what happens long-term when you don't meet this need, and how you can avoid these pitfalls by following three simple steps today. But first, let's take a look at what passion really is.

500 Live Tele-classes

These are live, interactive tele-classes that usually have a video component. Kids get to interact with Aurora, share their excitement with other kids working on the same project and ask questions (parents ask questions too). They fun, exciting and engaging for kids. These are easy to promote and have high perceived value.

About once each month, Aurora hosts live science tele-class, which is totally free and open to everyone. Topics vary from electricity to robotics to astronomy to hovercraft, and each tele-class always includes a science experiment (or two) during the call. All you need is a phone and a computer to participate.

Here's how it works: Aurora will first walk you through the basic science principles of the day. Then you'll do a quick experiment by watching a video for instructions and actually doing the experiment yourself. Finally, you'll come back to the call for questions and experiment information (like how to take it further). She stays on the phone at the end as long as there are questions to answer.

  • 100 What IS Science? Science is more than a classroom. it's actually pretty difficult to define. Science is not about what we know, but rather about how we face what we don't know.  It's not a textbook of principles, set of rules, or collection of factoids. It's a process, a thing you do. Science is what happens when you ask questions, get back answers, and try to figure and make sense of it all.

I see countless emails from homeschool parents sharing their biggest challenges. Some are pretty random and individual, but some come up again and again. Among the top five, there's one that is surprising. It goes something like this.

"We don't really do that much's not that he's not interested, but to be honest, I guess I just was never very good at it myself. It's not exactly my favorite thing to do."

Or, another variation sound like: "I know I should spend more time on science, but I just don't have the time to go through it with my daughter that often..."

If you can relate, I can too!

That's why this really caught my attention. This NASA Rocket Scientist-turned-mom has created some great experiments on video that walk kids through them step-by-step. I just got a link to three of them you can have free access to, and thought you might like to try them with your kids:

Astronomy - Take a Tour of the Galaxy Right Now!

Electricity - Very Cool Electricity Experiments

Build a working Hovercraft in 25 minutes

There are lots more on her website too.

I thought they were pretty cool, but I want to know what you think.

Until next time,

Really quick...

Subject: Are You Ready to Teach Science This Month?

It's hard to believe that a new school year is starting.

I know a lot of people (like me) are trying to get everything together for homeschooling this month.  And I know how I used to struggle to find a hands-on science curriculum that was fun for my kids, but also taught them the kind of science they really needed to learn.  Also, I wanted them to be able to go through it largely on their own (since science isn't really my forte, and I want them to be able to do independent learning).

Finally, I found one!  This is the BEST science curriculum.  It's the Supercharged Science e-Science program.   First, it's hands-on, so they're not just reading some dry book.  I mean, my kids just can't learn from pictures the way they can from doing it themselves.  Plus, it's video-based (and taught by this super-energetic and engaging woman named Aurora), so they get to see everything step-by-step as they go through experiments.

It's self-guiding too, so they can work on it independently (this is a real bonus for me).

I'm just blown away by how much is included.

If you're looking for a new curriculum (or even if you're not), you have to check this out.  I mean it is so much better than anything else out there (even top well-known ones).

Go here to check it out:

Oh, it's not too expensive either - something else I liked about it.

P.S. They also have a bunch of free science experiments and activities on the website:

Just a quick share.  I just found this incredible science curriculum.  My kids absolutely love it, and they can mostly do it on their own.

It will totally take care of science for your kids for the next year.  I mean, it's really easy to use and very complete.  As a parent, it just simplified a challenging piece of my homeschooling.

You have to try the Supercharged Science curriculum.

Testimonials for e-Science Curriculum Program

Feel free to use these however you like as social proof for how cool our stuff is. And yes, they are all real.

"You have been such a fun inspiration for our son Sam, and totally got him fired up to build, connect, explode, invent, test, create, discover, question... and in a nutshell, get wildly excited about how our physical world behaves through experimentation. Thank you! Thank you!" ~Jan Soto, San Luis Obispo

"When I asked my kids what the highlights of our year had been, they unanimously said it was Aurora's Supercharged Science Camp. They had the most wonderful week making gadgets, mixing goo, playing with lasers and walking on water! Aurora inspired them to try, tinker and think!" ~ Viviane Martinez, Santa Barbara, California

"I love the way you organize learning science it makes my life so much easier as a non-science oriented homeschool mom. Thank you so much for all your work. Thanks so much for your quick responses We love your stuff!!!!" ~Jan Sanchez

"Aurora, that was an amazing Astronomy presentation you put together for the eCamp. I love astronomy and have listened to lots of kid geared presentations with my children.... boring! Yours kept me huddled close to the phone with my son. So much information offered in a conversational way like we're sitting around the dinner table discussing something we're passionate about." ~Brenda Praggastis

"Aurora knows her stuff. The video demonstrations are clear, engaging and inspiring. The text is easy to understand. The experiments go from fun to hilarious! The online section will never let you get bored... The customer service is better than we've found in any business, whether homeschool resource-oriented or not. You will have that taken-care-of feeling.   Put it all together, and you have the best deal anywhere. Oh, did I mention? We're really happy with our purchase." ~Helen Dallman

"My boys have been picking away at the eCamp electricity experiments and they threw a FIT when I told them it was time to put it away because it was time for dinner. I am not happy about their bad attitudes, but I have been homeschooling for 8 years now and they have NEVER reacted with such vehemence about wanting to CONTINUE school as they did with your science.  I was completely overjoyed that they were enjoying it so much."   ~Samantha Sampson

"I LOVE THE PROGRAM!!!  I love that you have the forethought to give us supply lists.  I LOVE that you speak to my kids about atoms, particles, accelerators, generators, nuclear physics, all four types of force and treat them like they are...REAL SCIENTISTS !!!! You are a wonderful role-model for my scientific daughter and son, as well as for my husband and I.  You do have a tremendous impact in helping us motivate our learners.

"Let me reiterate that never before in one day, in SOOO many ways have I heard my kids so clearly exclaim: "I CAN!"  I love the warning you post on your website encouraging repetition, persistance, and participation. ALL LEARNING should have this label!"  ~Bernadette Frischkorn, Alaska
